This statement is among one of the most surprising and wondrous in all of history.
Jesus, who died and was buried, is alive!
The “men” speaking in these verses are angels (see Matthew 28:2). They’ve been sent from heaven to deliver this astonishing true good news to a group of women, who arrived at the tomb of Jesus on the Sunday morning after His Friday crucifixion.
But when the women arrived, the tomb’s stone doorway had been rolled open, and the grace was empty!
The angels explain why: “He has risen!”
Jesus — who was publicly executed, buried without breath or a pulse, lifeless — Jesus has been bodily resurrected, just as He said He would.
The news of these men is true — and it’s good news for every person! It means that death — which all humans are subject to as the judgment for our sin against God — death has been undone!
The resurrection of Jesus is our sure hope that, when we believe in Jesus’s death for our sins and His resurrection, He spiritually resurrects our souls, and gives us the promise of a bodily resurrection when He returns again (see I Thessalonians 4:16)!
from church history:
"Ay, it is good news for every sinner here. Christ is alive; if you seek him he will be found of you. He is not a dead Christ to whom I point you today. He is risen; and he is able to save to the uttermost them that come unto God by him. There is no better news for sad people, for distressed, desponding, and despairing people, than this— the Savior lives, able still to save and willing to receive you to his tender heart." — Charles Spurgeon
“Death used to be strong and terrible, but now, since the sojourn of the Savior and the death and resurrection of His body, it is despised; and obviously it is by the very Christ Who mounted on the cross that it has been destroyed and vanquished finally.” — Athanasius, “On the Incarnation”
“…Christ’s achievement in rising from the dead was the first event of its kind in the whole history of the universe… He has forced open a door that has been locked since the death of the first man. He has met, fought, and beaten the King of Death. Everything is different because He has done so.” — C.S. Lewis

pray it.
One of the best ways to remember God’s Word is to pray it back to Him. Each month, we’ll provide a short prayer based on the memory verse for you to use or adapt.
The prayer for the April 2026 verse is an excerpt from a prayer in a classic book of prayers called “The Valley of Vision.”
“Jesus strides forth as the victor,
conqueror of death, hell, and all opposing might;
He bursts the bands of death,
tramples the powers of darkness down,
and lives for ever.
He…comes forth from the prison house of the grave
free, and triumphant over sin, Satan, and death…
What more could be done than Thou hast done!
Thy death is my life, Thy resurrection my peace.”
